Inspector Mahan is a thirty-two year veteran of the Suffolk County Police Department. Upon graduation from the Police Academy in 1993, he was assigned to the 3rd Precinct in Bayshore. In 2003 he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the 7th Precinct in Shirley where he spent eleven years assigned to Patrol, COPE, and Precinct Crime Section. In 2015 he returned to the 3rd Precinct upon promotion to Lieutenant. In 2018, he was promoted to Captain and became the Executive Officer of Highway Patrol Bureau. In 2019 he was promoted to Deputy Inspector and assigned to the Office of the Chief of Department for three years. In 2022 he was assigned to Highway Patrol Bureau and served as the Commanding Officer. In 2023 he was promoted to Inspector and became the Commanding Officer of Legal Bureau and subsequently the Commanding Officer of the Communications and Records Bureau. In March 2025, he became the Commanding Officer of the 4th Precinct in Smithtown.
Inspector Mahan holds a BS from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and obtained his Juris Doctor from St. John’s University School of Law in Queens.
